Providence College Turns 100: Be a Part of the Centennial Celebration
Events being held now through the end of 2016
When the fall semester of the 2016-17 academic year begins later this month, Providence College will mark the 100th anniversary of its founding. To celebrate this historic milestone, the College will host events honoring its century of academic excellence and meaningful service in the Catholic and Dominican tradition.
Between now and the end of this year, PC will present a series of speakers and conferences, including notables such as Doris Kearns Goodwin, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and author, who will provide the opening address to PC’s Liberal Arts Honors Symposium, “Truth and the Liberal Arts;” His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan, archbishop of New York, who will present the keynote address for Providence College’s Theological Exchange between Catholics and Jews lecture series; and Nicholas Kristof, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and The New York Times op-ed columnist, who will mark the official opening of the Providence College centennial celebration with a keynote address at Convocation.
Founded in 1917, Providence College is the only college or university in the United States administered by the Dominican Friars. The Catholic, liberal arts college has an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 3,900 students and offers degrees in 49 academic majors. Since 1997, Providence College consistently has been ranked among the top five regional universities in the North according to U.S. News & World Reports’ “America’s Best Colleges.”
Upcoming Providence College Centennial Events:
Wednesday, August 31, 2016 – Pulitzer Prize-winning author and The New York Times op-ed columnist Nicholas Kristof will mark the official opening of the Providence College centennial celebration with a keynote address, followed by a Q&A and book signing.
Tuesday, September 13, 2016 – Renowned art historian Monsignor Timothy Verdon, director of the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo and the Diocesan Office of Sacred Art and Church Cultural Heritage in Florence, will present “The Dominicans and the Renaissance in Florence,” the first public lecture in Providence College’s Centennial Presidential Speaker Series. Monsignor Verdon also will give a master class to PC students and faculty on Wednesday, September 14 entitled, “The Art of Presenting Art: The New Florence Cathedral Museum.”
Friday, September 23, 2016 – Dr. Clayborne Carson, scholar, author, and curator of the Martin Luther King, Jr. papers at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford University, will present a lecture in the Providence College 2016-2017 Humanities Forum series.
Saturday, October 1, 2016 – Grammy Award-winning trumpet virtuoso Chris Botti will cap PC’s St. Dominic Weekend celebration. The full day of activities will include the always-popular Friar 5K road race and an evening centennial event that will feature the world premiere of a film about Providence College produced by Mike Leonard ’70 & ’00Hon., a former long-time “Today” show correspondent.
Friday, October 21, 2016 – Doris Kearns Goodwin, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and author, will provide the opening address, “The Presence of the Greatness of the Past,” as part of a weekend-long Liberal Arts Honors Symposium, “Truth and the Liberal Arts.”
Saturday, October 29, 2016 – Shiza Shahid, Pakistani social activist and co-founder of Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai’s Malala Foundation, will present the keynote address at the New Student Family Weekend opening ceremony.
Thursday, November 3, 2016 – His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan, archbishop of New York, will present the keynote address for Providence College’s Theological Exchange Between Catholics and Jews lecture series, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Vatican II document Nostra Aetate.
Tuesday, November 15, 2016 – Rev. James Martin, S.J., author and editor-at-large of “America,” and “The National Catholic Review,” popular media commentator, and The New York Times best-selling author of “The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything,” brings the Gospels to life in “Jesus: A Pilgrimage.”
