Providence College School of Business Announces First Recipient of Ruane Award for Business Education Innovation

Providence, R.I. – Providence College School of Business (PCSB) announced today the inaugural recipient of the Ruane Award for Business Education Innovation – Dr. Robert A. Snyder, professor of management at the Haile/U.S. Bank College of Business at Northern Kentucky University.

Snyder will receive a cash award in the amount of $5,000 for his work, “Let’s Burn Them All: Reflections on the Learning-Inhibitory Nature of Introduction to Management and Introduction to Organizational Behavior Textbooks,” Journal of Management Education, Vol. 38, No. 5 (October), pp. 733-758.

“A true innovator, Dr. Snyder does business educators a huge favor by daring us to teach with materials that are engaging and which reflect what we know about the science of teaching and learning,” said PCSB dean Dr. Sylvia Maxfield.

The Business Education Innovation Center (BEIC) is housed in PCSB and is funded by Michael A. Ruane ’71, former chairman of the Board of Trustees at PC from 2004 – 2013. Dr. M. Cary Collins holds the Michael A. Ruane Endowed Chair in Business Innovation and serves as the director of the BEIC.

The process of selection for the award consisted of submissions of manuscripts and publications with a focus on business education innovation, spanning all business disciplines, which were vetted by a panel comprised of seasoned business education professionals from Boston University, Northeastern University, Gonzaga University, Creighton University, Clark University, Bentley University, Providence College, University of Iowa, Northeastern College, Merrimack College, and Gonzaga University.

Through their work, the award selection committee assists the BEIC in accomplishing the following objectives: emphasizing the importance of innovation in business education, sharing innovative techniques or practices easily adapted to any business discipline, raising awareness of business education innovation for the larger business faculty audience, and rewarding business education innovation research.

The mission of PCSB’s Business Education Innovation Center is to stimulate, promote, and enhance innovation and comprehension in collegiate business education; to research, evaluate and curate best classroom-practices both at PC and in the larger community for collegiate business education; and to earn a position as a respected authority and global resource for best classroom practices and their propagation in collegiate business education.
