PROVIDENCE COLLEGE RANKS THIRD IN THE US FOR SEMESTER-LONG STUDY ABROAD

(Providence, R.I.) Providence College (PC) announced today that it was recently ranked 3rd in the United States for semester-long study abroad in the category of Master’s Colleges and Universities. This is two ranks higher than the previous year’s study and PC is the only Rhode Island college or university ranked in the top twenty. The designation was released in the annual Open Doors report conducted by the Institute of International Education (IIE), and covers the 2019-2020 academic year, the latest year reported.

“It’s wonderful to have this recognition and level of PC student participation in study abroad which is a testament to the dedicated staff in the Center for Global Education and the campus-wide support for study abroad among faculty, staff, and the administration,” said Christian Wilwohl, PC’s dean of Global Education. “It truly takes a village, and everyone should be proud of PC’s strong study abroad culture.”

The Open Doors report showed PC with 425 students who spent a full semester studying abroad during the 2019-2020 academic year. That amounted to slightly more than 45% of the College’s junior class. The study ranks PC as 6th  in the country for undergraduate participation in study abroad programs (up from 24th in the previous year).  In the Master’s Colleges & Universities category, PC is ranked 4th for total study abroad students (up from 16th in the previous year).

Founded in 1917, Providence College is the only college or university in the United States administered by the Dominican Friars. The Catholic, liberal arts college has an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 4,100 students and offers degrees in 49 academic majors. Since 1997, Providence College consistently has been ranked among the top five regional universities in the North according to U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges.”
