PC Announces Centennial Events for Spring
JANUARY 24, 2017 – Providence, RI – A series of spring semester events will commemorate the year-long celebration of Providence College’s centennial.
February 13 – Centennial Presidential Speaker Series. Danielle Allen, Ph.D., director of the Edmond Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University presents “Democracy in Education.” A MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant recipient, Allen is the author of five books, and a contributing columnist for The Washington Post. 4:00 p.m., ’64 Hall, Slavin Center.
February 14 – Charter Day. A celebration of the 100th anniversary of the College receiving its charter from the State of Rhode Island. 3:00 pm, State Room, State House, 82 Smith Street, Providence (invitation only).
February 24 – Humanities Forum: “Sacred and Profane.” Providence College choir I Cantori illuminates the relationship of text and music in early choral works and their influence on modern choral composition. Dr. T.J. Harper, conductor, and Michael Kregler, accompanist. 3:00 p.m., Fiondella Great Room, Ruane Center for the Humanities.
March 16 – Centennial Presidential Speaker Series. The Centennial Presidential Speaker Series concludes with a panel discussion on global health, featuring several renowned experts, including Robert Gallo, M.D.’59, a biomedical researcher who is the co-discoverer of HIV. Other panelists include: Paul Farmer, M.D., anthropologist and physician; co-founder of Partners in Health; longtime activist and leader in global health care; Robert Gallo ’59, M.D., biomedical researcher and co-discoverer of the HIV; co-founder and director of the Institute of Human Virology at University of Maryland School of Medicine; co-founder and scientific director of the Global Virus Network; and Jennie Weiss Block, T.O.P., D. Min., chief advisor to Dr. Farmer since 2009 and his chief of staff in his role as UN Deputy Special Envoy for Haiti under President Clinton. 4:00 p.m., Ruane 105.
March 24 – St Joseph Lecture. Dr. Massimo Faggioloi, professor of theology and religious studies at Villanova University, will present the St. Joseph Lecture on History, Justice and Peace. 4:00 p.m., Aquinas Hall.
March 30 – Sons of Providence: the Jewish History of Providence College, 1917-1965. Dr. Jennifer Illuzzi, associate professor of history, and Dr. Arthur Urbano, associate professor of theology, will present a lecture on the experiences of Jewish students at PC prior to the Second Vatican Council. 4:30 p.m., Harkins Hall.
April 24 – St. Catherine of Siena Lecture. The St. Catherine of Siena Lecture on Spirituality and the Frontiers of Evangelization is one of the four major lectures held at the Center for Catholic and Dominican Studies each year. 4:00 p.m., Aquinas Hall.
April 29 – Arthur and Patricia Ryan Center for Business Studies Dedication. A dedication ceremony celebrating the Arthur and Patricia Ryan Center for Business Studies, the new home to the Providence College School of Business. 12:00 p.m., Ryan Center for Business Studies.
May 19 – Providence College: 100 Years of Light featuring Waterfire Providence. This special lighting will honor PC’s Commencement Weekend. 7:00 p.m., Downtown Providence.
May 21 – Commencement 2017. A special centennial year commencement ceremony will mark the graduation of the Providence College Class of 2017. 11:00 a.m, Dunkin Donuts Center, Providence.
Founded in 1917, Providence College is the only college or university in the United States administered by the Dominican Friars.
