Providence College Student Chosen as Newman Civic Fellow

Katherine Martinez ’20, Honored by Campus Compact of Southern New England

Providence, R.I. – March 26, 2018 – Providence College (PC) today announced that Katherine Martinez of Stamford, Connecticut, a member of the Class of 2020, has been chosen as a Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact of Southern New England (CCSNE). The Newman Civic Fellowship is a one-year fellowship for community-committed college students from Campus Compact member institutions. CCSNE, a Boston-based non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education, recently announced the 268 students who will make up the organization’s 2018 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows.

Martinez, a biology as well as a public and community service studies major, attended Westhill High School graduating in 2016. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs. Angel Uchupailla of Stamford, CT. A first-generation college student, Martinez has volunteered in a local middle school, is a resident assistant, and participates in Campus Ministry’s Peer Ministry Program.
CCSNE member presidents and chancellors are invited annually to nominate one community-committed student from their institution for the fellowship. These nominees are individuals who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country and abroad.
Founded in 1917, Providence College is the only college or university in the United States administered by the Dominican Friars. The Catholic, liberal arts college has an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 4,000 students and offers degrees in 50 academic majors. Since 1997, Providence College consistently has been ranked among the top five regional universities in the North according to U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges.”
