Providence College Names Christian Wilwohl as Dean of Global Education
PROVIDENCE, RI, AUGUST 31, 2020: Providence College (PC) has announced that Dr. Christian Wilwohl has been named the College’s new dean of global education.
Dr. Wilwohl has extensive experience in international education. For the past eight years, he has served as study abroad director for the Center for International Programs at SUNY New Paltz in New Paltz, NY. In this position, Dr. Wilwohl was responsible for the center’s budget, registration, and marketing. He also has worked with academic departments to implement curriculum integration of study abroad and to develop short-term, faculty-led programs, including new programs, in Cuba, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Jamaica, South Africa, and Thailand.
As Dean, Dr. Wilwohl will administer and provide leadership for PC’s Center for Global Education and its operations in support of students at various stages of studying abroad. He will collaborate with PC’s senior administration in supporting the international and student engagement goals of the College’s Strategic Plan. He also will be responsible for directing the development and administration of PC’s education abroad policies and procedures, and advise the President’s Cabinet on issues related to international education.
Dr. Wilwohl also will collaborate with PC’s Center for Teaching Excellence and the Center for Engaged Learning to further global learning initiatives across campus while partnering with the Office of Mission & Ministry regarding planning for international service immersion trips.
Dr. Wilwohl will guide and support academic departments and faculty in the development and oversight of study abroad options that integrate with the College’s liberal arts curriculum. In doing so, he will provide academic departments with appropriate faculty development opportunities to lead and administer educational programs abroad.
Prior to his position at SUNY New Paltz, Dr. Wilwohl was the off-campus studies coordinator at the University of Lynchburg (VA) for five years. He also has taught courses at the University of Lynchburg and Dankook University in South Korea.
Dr. Wilwohl earned a doctorate (Ed.D) in international education from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, a master’s degree, with Merit, in African studies at the University of London, and a bachelor’s degree in international studies and French, summa cum laude, from McDaniel College (MD).
Founded in 1917, Providence College is the only college or university in the United States administered by the Dominican Friars and has an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 4,000 students.
