Providence College To Begin Allowing Limited In-Person Student Attendance At Outdoor Athletic Events On Campus
PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, MARCH 1, 2021: Providence College announced today that it will begin allowing in-person attendance at outdoor athletic events on campus, starting Wednesday, March 3rd. The College is taking this step with guidance from the Rhode Island Department of Health and with specific requirements for each of PC’s on-campus athletic facilities.
“We are excited that the Providence College students will be able to attend games at our outdoor athletic facilities over the next few months,” Athletic Director Bob Driscoll said. “Our student-athletes are looking forward to seeing their classmates in the stands supporting them as they compete. We hope that the athletic contests will provide our students with an opportunity to have fun in a safe environment while cheering for the Friars.”
“The overwhelming majority of our students have been very diligent in following COVID-19 protocols since they returned to campus in late January. I am very pleased and proud that they take this responsibility to each other and to the campus community so seriously. I know they are weary of all the rules and regulations stemming from the pandemic, and I am pleased that we will now be able to relax restrictions to the point where Friars will be able to watch their friends and roommates compete at the varsity level,” said Dr. Steven Sears, vice president of student affairs and dean of students.
State of Rhode Island guidelines stipulate that event capacity cannot exceed one person per 125 square feet. Additionally, NCAA protocols state that there shall be a 20-foot buffer zone between spectators and the competition area.
The Providence College on-campus outdoor athletic facilities and their capacity requirements are as follows:
- Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium (Lacrosse, Men’s and Women’s Soccer) – 250 students max
- Glay Field (Softball) – 50 students max
- Hendricken Field (Men’s and Women’s Track & Field) – 175 students max
- Lennon Field (Field Hockey) – No students
- Tennis Courts (Women’s Tennis) – No students
RI guidelines state that only members of the Providence College community who are part of the institution’s testing protocol are allowed to attend these games. (PC tests students twice each week.) No parents or external constituents will be allowed to attend any games on campus.
